Browsing blue posts on EU forums, I saw Glauzuu say the following:

To answer this and the original post, if you guys see any inappropriate names then please report them by submitting a ticket and one of our GMs will investigate and take appropriate action as soon as possible. It's just not realistic to think we can actively police every realm for inappropriate names, or that we will go through every other realm to check for names after your own name has been reported and changed.

Quite frankly, I don't understand how it's not realistic for GMs to do a quick armory after receiving a report of an inappropriate name. If one name is offensive, shouldn't all identical names be offensive? Nobody is saying they need to be actively searching for inappropriate names. Simply the names that are reported to them. Even if provided with the names on each server in a GM ticket, action will not be taken. I've been informed that you cannot report them if you are not on their server.. and even if you make a lvl 1 char just to report on the server with the offending character they still will not take action. However, we see their names when we browse the armory and can find it offensive there.

tl;dr : If one name is offensive, shouldn't all identical names be offensive and be dealt with in the same fashion?

For the most part they are, but they must be reported the same way too. A report on one realm does not translate into action being taken on all existing names.

A name that may be added to the restricted list is also not retroactively applied across all realms.

Please keep in mind that our policies have always been reactionary. I understand you may wish to see things done differently but those of us who moderate this forum do not make such decisions.

Yes, I have. I spoke with 5 or more GM's on the issue, all of them took no action, and I was informed to basically stop sending GM tickets reporting offending names.

That would be correct, as your petitions consisted mostly of reporting «every player, team, etc.. that has X name».

We are generally unable to to act based on the «you changed my name so do it to them» reports. If you see a character that has a name that you believe violates our Terms of Use, report it. We will look into the report and take appropriate actions. The Armory is not a viable research tool for generating such reports.

This was a great excuse when it was..

It was never an excuse. The Armory is not a viable source of information for such reports because it does not always reflect current information. If a name is appropriately reported by a character, who would have seen the offending character's name, appropriate actions would have been taken if the name was found to be in violation.

This usually means that the character's name will be flagged for a name change so when the character logs back in they will be prompted to select a new name. Now, if that character is not logged into, the option will never be triggered and thus the name not changed. They are still flagged for it but the character has to log in for it to take effect. Or, the character's name is changed but will continue to appear on the armory and a new entry is made for the character with the new name.

Some characters are simply deleted by whomever had the inappropriate name, we take appropriate actions but since the character is deleted it isn't necessary to change its' name.

Also, even if armory is in beta still, GMs should have access to a more accurate listing of characters that isn't available for public use.

We do, but this is how our policies currently work. You are welcome to provide your constructive feedback as to how you believe we should address such issues but this is how they are currently handled and have been handled for as long as this game has been online.

Please keep in mind that, for the most part, each individual realm decides what names they will tolerate based on what names they report to us, as well as the type of realm it is. Obviously RP realms have a special rule set that calls for stricter protocols based on the genre. The same rules apply based on our inappropriate and higher categories, regardless of the realm type.

That does not mean that an inappropriate name that may exist on the realm does not violate our Terms of Use but attention must be drawn to it through proper channels before we will be able to address it.

Your opinion in this case is not relevant.

Given the statement that Slice quoted I'd say his opinion is relevant, within the bounds of the response he made. Would that opinion factor in if the name was under review? No, but that isn't the point of the response.

And I didn't bring up my name to start up another ridiculous argument about whether it's against the ToU in the forums. It was brought up as an example of why the proposed automated system is a bad idea.

Well, why you believe the proposed automated system would be a bad idea. In which case your opinion is very much relevant.

Keep in mind, folks, this is still a discussion. The motivation behind the original questions are not really relevant but that doesn't mean they aren't a factor. Please keep it a constructive discussion.

Tomten had some great suggestions… is there any way to get this thread redirected to the general forum?

No, I'm afraid not, Mascaron. Once we reply to the thread it must remain within the CSF. Moving a «Blue» response out to another forum tends to cause a bit of a kerfuffle.

Thanks for explaining in more detail though Vrakthis.

My pleasure, Mascaron. I hope I explained it well enough that you'll be able to work within the system that we currently have. At least for now. Nothing is stagnant and our policies and procedures are always open to change, believe me, these matters are always up for discussion and review.

Do you whiny tattletales all have broken ignore buttons on your social screens, or are you just that bored with the game that you have to be the name police?

Ignoring violations of the Terms of Use that every player agrees to abide by does nothing to foster a fun and friendly environment. Only when the message is clear that such behavior will not be tolerated on realm will the atmosphere on a realm change.

This game has a Teen Rating based on the type of content it has as well as the type of behavior that is permitted. Though we are generally unable to stop someone from saying something inappropriate before they say it we can and will deliver the consequences for those actions if properly reported. You may be looking for an environment where hostility and belligerence is welcomed, Nine, but that place is not here.
