You may want to try running a stress–test program like Furmark to see if the video card can last. If it has trouble, you may want to contact your video card's manufacturer for help. If it is fine, have you tried either switching to Direct3D 11 or 9 modes for World of Warcraft? Which one you switch to is dependent to what you're currently using.

Brockshamson,

These are tough to diagnose as it can be caused by many things. Read Nvidia's thoughts on the issue here: http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=65161

It includes several possible causes.

Wow, ran perfectly fine last night (2/22/11) for raids, and when I tried to log on this morning (2/23/11) I have been getting this error when loading my character into the world.

«display driver Nvidia Windows kernel mode driver, version 266.58 stopped responding and has recovered.»

It ceases up the game, creates some wicked Artifacting, and give me that error. At which point I cnrtl+alt+dlt and end the.exe…

I am running Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. And I am using an EVGA 285 GTX 2gig.

I've tried rolling back the driver to 260.99 to no avail. I've updated Windows to no avail. I've google searched for the past 2 hours and finding no solutions that work.

I've played CS:S and BFBC2 without getting this error. I have no idea what else to do.

Please help!

Provided below is my DXdiag, since that is what I've seen all blue posts suggest about this problem.

Brockshamson,

Win 7 and Vista are the same as regards to this issue.

Also, did you update to SP1 for Win 7 before or after you started getting this problem?

World of Warcraft's DirectX 11 mode falls down to 10 (Shader Model 4) for cards that only support that. Your 285 supports DirectX 10. If the drivers die to the default DX9 mode for some reason, trying 11 might have a different result.

Water should be the only thing that might give you a problem but then it'd just be invisible. Things aren't supposed to go in and out of existence like that. Do you have any driver–related settings that might be bugging both D3D9 and D3D11 modes? Try going to the NVIDIA Control Panel's 3D settings and restore them all to default. Also make sure the game is running in 24–bit color and depth mode by typing this in your chat window:

/console gxcolorbits 24

/console gxdepthbits 24

/console gxrestart
